December 2023
As residents of the French Quarter, we are blessed.
We say this because we are fortunate to be able to live in America’s oldest historic neighborhood – to appreciate the architecture and the stories that that architecture tells. We tell these stories through not only us as the people that live here – but to the world. It is this history and the architecture of this 300 year plus city that we have to offer. What we nurture. What we love about our neighborhood.
As we approach another important year in the French Quarter, we are challenged. Every year seems important when our infrastructure is under stress. As we struggle with climate changes and street flooding, enforcement issues, perennial parking problems, and numerous safety concerns to go down the list, it’s important that we be vigilant.
We must hold our public officials accountable for the job they are doing and the ramifications of their policies on our quality of life in the French Quarter.
We ask because at French Quarter Citizens, it’s important to keep the movement toward accountability going forward.
In 2023 we have advocated for our residents by addressing many issues affecting the Vieux Carré and its quality of life:
- Continued the pressure on the City to limit the number of Short-Term Rentals in the French Quarter and to have more robust enforcement of the existing laws
- Called for increased awareness of the illegal vending problem throughout the Quarter
- Collaborated with the French Quarter Task force for effective FQ patrols
- Continued our efforts to repair our street lights
- Advocated for parking enforcement, zoning, homelessness, noise, and other ongoing issues of concern in the French Quarter.
